In Late August

Far off developed roads, deep within the sparse brush of central Iceland the sighting of a rare migratory puffin brings excitement to the island’s small community of birders.

Upon the discovery, avian photographer Berg and his son Olaf begin an adventure through the icelandic countryside following the path of the last of a species. In contention with the country’s growing highway network, the two set out from their home in Hallormsstadur in pursuit of the rare fowl.

Through their distant interactions with the puffin and their own personal confrontations, the father and son duo are faced with challenges that put their morals, minds and familial relationship to the test. Suspending his marital plans in order to help his father chase the dreams of his fleeting youth, Olaf finds himself in a constant state of disconnect with his every day life in this spontaneous hunt for his father’s puffin, but in this separation from his day to day, he finds a closer bond to both his father and himself.

Directed by Rhiven Jökull, 2010.
